ABOUT SANDRA POINDEXTER

Violinist, Composer, Educator

Born and raised in Oakland, California, Sandra’s violin lessons began in early childhood, learning classical music. Her musical experience has flourished over the years, expanding to jazz, Cuban, and mariachi. This experience has led to the acknowledgment of her contributions to music as the recipient of awards, including the Premerio  Artistico Violinista, awarded at the 2017 Novara Jazz Festival in Novara, Italy, and the Bay Area Jazz Institute Lifetime Achievement  Award in 2017.

As a protégée of the great alto saxophonist John Handy, she is a former member of John Handy with Class. For over 15 years, she performed with John Handy at many major venues and festivals nationally and internationally, including The Village Vanguard in New York and the Monterey Jazz Festival. Highlights include opening for Dizzy Gillespie at the Paramount Theatre Black Filmmaker Awards, honoring him, and opening for Joe Williams.

As a member of the Cuban group Orquesta La Moderna Tradición, some performance highlights include the Lincoln Square Summer Festival in New York, the Ford Theater in Southern California, the Smithsonian, and the San Jose and SF Jazz festivals, to name a few. La Moderna has performed with such great Cuban musicians as Richard Egues and Chocolate Armenteros. 

For the past seven years, she has toured extensively as a member of Idris Ackamoor and the Pyramids, performing at various venues and festivals internationally and nationally, covering 21 European countries and Japan. Sandra continues to perform and record with a wide variety of musicians at numerous festivals and venues locally, nationally, and internationally.
