Bridging the Gap: OPC and SFJAZZ Partner for Equitable Music Education

Recognizing significant disparities in access to jazz education, Oakland Public Conservatory of Music (OPC) and SFJAZZ Education formed a strategic alliance to address these inequities. Together, we aim to empower middle and high school musicians of color in Oakland and the Greater East Bay by providing comprehensive resources and opportunities.

In 2015, we launched the Afterschool Jazz program (formerly OPC-SFJAZZ Academy) to offer underserved students a pathway to explore and excel in jazz music. The program is designed to foster a vibrant community of young musicians by enhancing music literacy, technical skills, and creative expression.

The Afterschool Jazz program is offered at OPC's main campus, and select Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) schools with established music programs.
