Brick by Brick, Note By Note
Support OPC in our campaign to build a state-of-the-art music school in the heart of Old Oakland!
From private studios to classrooms, rehearsal spaces, a performance stage, and more, we need your help to build the next phase of our growth.
At OPC, we recognize that music is not just an art form but; it is a vital expression of culture and community. Music makes us human. Our programs are designed to celebrate this humanity and the diverse musical traditions that have shaped our city, offering a space where individuals can connect, learn, and grow. We believe that by centering African American musical culture in our offerings, we not only pay homage to its profound influence on American music but also empower our community to continue this legacy.
Over the years, OPC has faced and overcome many challenges, including displacement, rising costs, and the pressures of untenable facilities. Despite these struggles, we have continued to serve our community with resilience, providing a space for individuals to connect with their musical heritage and cultivate their talents.
We proudly bring world-class musicians through our doors, offering our students the rare opportunity to learn from and interact with high-caliber artists. Notable musicians such as trombonist Steve Turre, banjoist Rhiannon Giddens, and the Chromatic Brass Collective have shared their artistry with us, enriching the lives of our students and broadening their understanding of musical excellence. These experiences expose our community to the diverse traditions that have shaped American music and empower our young musicians to dream big.
