Course Description
Focusing on banjo technique and history, we will engage in the living culture of Black folk music making and sharing by:
Learning and practicing claw hammer-style banjo playing
Building familiarity with the songs and stories of Black folk musicians through the centuries to the present
Discussing the history of the instrument and contextualizing its relationship to and impact on culture
This seven-week session will aim to introduce each participant to the banjo and its history. This will help us understand the banjo and its origin while contributing to its future.
Prerequisites
No experience is required. This class is most appropriate for beginners new to the banjo and its history. Banjo rentals are available for registered students who live in the area.
